Pure Cinema: How a Brooklyn Filmmaker Union Redefined the Altar in Cartagena de Indias
Breaking the Mold Without Losing the Frame

When couples from design-forward environments like Brooklyn look toward the Realismo Mágico of Cartagena for their destination wedding, they often carry a silent, heavy friction. They embody a modern, fluid worldview, yet they deeply respect the emotional gravity that marriage holds for their traditional families back home.
This was the exact threshold where the journey of two incredible nature documentarians and journalists began. She, a brilliant writer and journalist born in Florida but with deep, visceral roots in Cartagena; he, a visionary filmmaker originally from Connecticut. Today, they co-create their life and art together in Brooklyn.
From their very first inquiry, their priority was clear: “…a wedding that merges that timeless classic feeling with a feeling of romance and magic…” where their bicultural families could seamlessly connect. However, beneath the logistics of a bilingual celebration lay a deeper worry. In both their families, marriage had always been formalized within the traditional, sacred walls of the Catholic Church. They were the first to break the mold and opt for a symbolic ceremony.
Their true concern wasn't the language—it was the fear of superficiality. Too often, contemporary symbolic weddings are diminished by modern, over-commercialized clichés—transient "hippie" trends or theatrical performances that risk making a sacred milestone look like a farce. Unable to find the right wedding celebrant, the bride was visibly tense, carrying the weight of proving to her family that their union held absolute credibility. She found peace the moment she discovered Bel Altar. They chose this ethereal experience because they recognized that a union outside the church does not demand less solemnity; it demands a deeper, more intentional architecture. A ceremony led by -as they defined me- “someone who really cares”.
The Power of Boundaries and Collaborative Flow

What made this journey truly exceptional was the couple's precise clarity. From the beginning, they were impeccably specific about what they envisioned for their ceremony. They established firm boundaries while maintaining an exquisite flexibility, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect that allowed my methodology to flow effortlessly. They trusted the process, and in doing so, they allowed the art to happen.
To elevate a multicultural ceremony beyond a standard bilingual script, a celebrant must possess profound cultural awareness. My role is not to translate words, but to bridge the delicate emotional space between two heritages. It was essential to provide the groom with the rich context of what marriage represents within the traditional Colombian framework, while reassuring the bride that her family’s roots would be treated with absolute reverence.
To anchor this ceremony, we introduced a profound liturgical element: a dedicated space to honor their ancestors. By inviting the memory of grandparents who could not be there physically, we instantly grounded the altar in lineage and history, leaving no room for superficiality.
Sacred Elements and Metaphor: The Volcanic Union
As artists who spend their lives documenting the raw, fragile beauty of our planet, the couple shared a deep sensitivity toward nature. During our deep-dive curation process, I analyzed the energetic alignment of their identities. She, a Leo (Fire); he, a Tauro (Earth).
In the middle of the ceremony, I asked them a question that caught them entirely by surprise: “Do you know the only place in the natural world where fire lives inside the earth?”
The answer is a volcano. They are a volcanic union—a perfect convergence of their two distinct energies.
To honor this metaphor, I reimagined one of their favorite songs, Champagne Supernova by Oasis. To bring 'Volcanic Supernova' to life, I collaborated with a brilliant local curator and musician who beautifully reimagines the sounds of Cartagena. I performed these exclusive verses live during the ritual, shifting the atmosphere into a space of pure emotion.
The Human Ocean and a Sovereign Declaration
Our ritual continued with a reimagined Ring Warming ceremony. The wedding rings, safely kept inside a custom wooden box hand-crafted by the groom’s sibling, traveled from the very last row of guests down to the ring bearer. As the bands passed through their hands, it created a "human ocean" of silent blessings—a nod to the maritime essence of Bel Altar’s seahorse legacy.
But the most transcendent climax of the evening was designed in complete secrecy with the bride’s mother, serving as one of our Blessing Bearers.
When the time came to formalize the union, we stepped forward to sign a custom Sovereign Declaration of Marriage. The bride’s mother surprised her by producing a sacred pen, blessed by the church, which had belonged to the bride's late maternal grandfather. He had passed away just years prior, but his legacy was physically present; it was the exact pen he used to sign his most important transatlantic agreements.
As they formalized their union using that ancestral pen, the groom’s father looked on, deeply moved, and joyfully exclaimed: “Wow, so now it's official!”
His joy stemmed from the astonishing precision of the liturgy. After the celebration, he shared a remarkable detail: earlier that day, while the groom and his groomsmen were getting ready together in their room, The Lord of the Rings happened to be playing in the background. In a moment of pure serendipity, the volcanic metaphor I had intuitively woven into the altar perfectly mirrored the legendary ending of the cinematic masterpiece they had just shared in their intimacy. To hear their favorite worlds collide on the altar—elevated by the live chords of Volcanic Supernova—left him speechless. For the groom’s father, and for everyone present, every single detail on that altar was a flawless mirror of who the couple truly was, capturing their deepest personalities, emotions, and tastes.
Days before the altar, we had gathered in the quiet intimacy of their family apartment in Bocagrande to transition their raw thoughts into Bel Altar’s luxury stationery. It was during this profound collaborative experience—the very catalyst that inspired our newly born Conjugal Manifesto service—that they surprised me with a deeply touching gesture. They presented me with a stunning vintage metal dish featuring a beautifully patinated seahorse—our brand’s sacred emblem. They read my soul just as I had spent months reading theirs.
There was no need for a traditional cathedral. The weight of their ancestry, the precision of the metaphors, and the raw honesty of their realities co-created a liturgy so heavy with truth that its legitimacy was undeniable. The celebration concluded majestically as the newlyweds departed, sailing away into the Caribbean sunset on her grandfather’s original sailboat.
